Coming HOME: Faith in Fearful Times
“Yes, so I brought this Bible as a healing artifact because it represents my faith and the trials and faith-building I went through during COVID-19. It was a moment when I really started to increase my prayer life.”
In our third portrait of the “Coming HOME: ReStorying U.S.” digital series, we set out on an inspiring journey alongside Genesis Capellán, a Dominican American whose roots stretch between New York and New Jersey. Genesis shares a profound story of how the COVID-19 pandemic rekindled her faith and became a source of hope and solace during a tumultuous time. Her experience during this period transformed her perception of truth and success.
Genesis brought a Bible as her healing artifact, symbolizing the revival of her faith during the pandemic. It serves as a reminder of the trials and the spiritual growth she experienced during this challenging period. Her relationship with prayer deepened, evolving from self-focused prayers to encompassing the well-being of her community and even strangers. This Bible is a powerful symbol of healing, a reminder that faith can provide solace and strength during the darkest times.
What is your favorite verse?
“And it’s in John, the book of John, chapter 14, verse 16. And it says, ‘I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit who reveals the truth about God.’ The word ‘advocate’ originally stuck out to me.”
Genesis opens the Bible to John 14:16, a passage that resonates with her journey. The passage speaks of receiving a Helper who stays with us forever, revealing the truth about God. The term ‘advocate’ particularly resonated with her, serving as a constant reminder of the presence of the Holy Spirit in her life. This message has become an integral part of her journey, offering guidance, strength, and hope.
What myths have died for you since 2020?
“Yes, so a myth that has died for me during the 2020 experience was that you have to be well-knowledgeable, well-versed, and well-experienced in order to succeed or get started in your passion. So I say that because a lot of people, myself included tend to think that we need to have all of this experience before we get started with something.”
Genesis shares a powerful insight gained during the challenges of 2020. She debunked the myth that one must be highly skilled and experienced to embark on their passions. The pandemic allowed her, and many others, the time and opportunity to explore and develop their hobbies and interests. Witnessing people around her embracing their creative pursuits, she recognized that passion and enthusiasm are the true driving forces behind success, not necessarily expertise.
“So definitely a myth is that you have to be good at something to do it, no, just do it, just do it.”
Genesis’s experience underscores the importance of simply taking that first step, pursuing your passion, and learning along the way. The myth that you must be proficient from the outset has been shattered, paving the way for personal growth, self-discovery, and the blossoming of talents and dreams.
Genesis’s story is a testament to the healing power of faith and the truth that emerges from life’s challenges. It’s a reminder that hope, resilience, and creativity can flourish even in the face of adversity.
